Dear Rainbeau, I’m glad I was finally able to share my love for Baggu with the members of The Yacht Club. We screen printed our “Dodgeball, Drinking & The Common Good” mantra on cerulean! and cobalt Baggu market bags to give to every person playing in each of our three dodgeball leagues this season. We printed 340 of them! I can’t express how fun it was to unfold and refold each bag out and back in its little case. Because it wasn’t. Ha. But they sure do look great. And I love giving gifts that don’t sit on a shelf but actually get used! There will be more Baggu goodness added to The Yacht Shop soon. Love, Rainbeau
Dear Rainbeau,
You can’t trust 8-year-olds with shit.

UPDATE - I learned that the girls who put this tape line down were actually 5 years old. Soo… I’m an asshole.
Dear Rainbeau,
(sigh) It’s over.
The months of brainstorming, planning, emailing, researching, discussing, brunching, budgeting, walk-throughs, meetings, Googling, diagramming, collaging, shopping, cutting, gluing, constructing, talking, talking, arguing, talking, meeting, emailing, and late nights are over.
The event went off without a hitch and was a night we’ll all remember (or wish we could). Here are a few of the things what we made:

Giant jenga!

Giant battleship! This was one I spent many hours on. The tea stained olden-timey maps of the Los Angeles harbor and the New England coast were my favorite part.
There was also two photobooths, 2 bars, a temporary tattoo artist on site (file under: Rainbeau’s drunk ideas come to life) and of course a dance floor.

We made a huge paint-by-number mural! Once all three pieces were complete and standing side-by-side you could read the phrase “Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean.” above a sea of water and a flock of seagulls.
I also did a kind of scavenger hunt throughout the venue. There were all sorts of hidden presents for guests to find. Some were flasks (those winners also received a bottle of whiskey), Umamicatessen gift cards, Yacht Club apparel and (my favorite) a beautiful nautical spoon ring by Kimberlin Silver Co.

Since the venue was already so dressed there wasn’t much to do. We added Yacht Club touches by sewing throw pillows from the first ever run of tee shirts ERYC did in 2010, hanging some maps & ship blueprints on the walls. I made a sweet knot-tying guide that was hung up, too. My favorite piece was the paper boat installation I made:

Until next year,
Rainbeau

Dear Rainbeau,
The Yacht Club hosted a little thank you shindig for all the dodgeball team captains last night. We all rendezvoused at The Darkroom for a few on-the-house Bushmills cocktails. They wanted to give the captains (26 in all) a little something that could show their gratitude and last longer than a whiskey-ginger. But, with Sadie Hawkins on the horizon there was next to no money to do so. Here’s what I came up with:
- 1.5” Succulents from the flower market: $1.20/each
- 4” Ikea pots: 50¢/each
- Soil, cardstock, stakes, double-sided tape: $0 (I had all of these on hand)
That’s right, we had 30 (a few extra just in case) beautiful gifts for around $50. Boom!
Well done you crafty sonuvabitch,
Rainbeau
Dear Rainbeau,
April is almost over? This year is flying by, so it’s no surprise that we’re on the cusp of a new season of dodgeball. I wanted to bake something special for my new batch of players for our Meet Your Team mixer. I couldn’t decide… chocolate chip cookies? Brownies? Peanut butter cup tarts? In the end I decided to do all three. Together.

This new Wilton Mini Pie Pan I got during Target’s post-Easter blow out seemed perfect for the monster cookie job.

Packaged up and ready to be handed out at the bar. From what I heard (from the kiss-asses on my team), they were delicious.

Dear Rainbeau,
This here pile of dirt is my latest baby. Yacht Club recently acquired this garden plot at the Jardin Del Rio Community Garden. This week we started some plants indoors (peppers, eggplant, and tomatoes) and have been prepping the soil for some sowing.
Happy Spring,
Rainbeau
Dear Rainbeau,
Last night was the first time I’ve ever decorated a Christmas tree other than our annual family tree. It was the first time I’ve decorated my own tree in adulthood. Was this magical experience shared with loved ones? Was a Bing Crosby record playing softly in the background? Did we simmer a pot of hot chocolate or cider and sip it as we leisurely decorated? Nope!
It was a rushed job, taking about 25 minutes (because the manager of the bar kept coming over insisting that we be finished). Awful Eurotrash was being dj’d so loud you had to yell to be heard. It was an unnecessarily stressful event. Quite the opposite of every other Christmas decorating experience I’ve had.
The fine folks at Yelp asked The Yacht Club if they’d like to be the recipient of their Christmas party’s suggested donation. Heck yes we would. So I spent yesterday getting decorations & supplies ready for the Christmas tree we would be contributing to the event. Between a couple things not going to plan (that’s a shocker) and the venue double booking, the evening was off to a rough start. But, as life always manages to do… things worked out. The other party cleared out, Yelp folks took over and we got our hands on a couple cocktails (that probably helped more than anything). Everyone who made a contribution was given a bottle opener. Yacht Club made a few new friends and some money. So, yay!

Dear Rainbeau,
Someone very important deemed October “Breast Cancer Awareness Month.” (Wouldn’t it be great if that meant breast cancer existed only in October?) In celebration of their love of boobs, The Yacht Club hosted a Ta-Ta Tournament and donated the proceeds to the Keep A Breast foundation.
I made “Boobled Water” (GET IT?) which was sold to the sweaty dodgeball players, I wrapped up the Bushmill prizes for the winning team, decorated with boob-shaped balloons, and set up a photobooth at the after party. Yay for boobs!

Rainbeau
Dear Rainbeau,
This weekend we had a BBQ for the Yacht Club’s new Saturday afternoon Venice league. I made some sweet anchor bunting, and hung up other nautical decorations. And I failed to take a single photo of the decorations. But I did put this dish of guacamole in this bowl of chips. So… there’s that.

Dear Rainbeau,
This weekend Good Magazine hosted a fundraiser for the Ciclavia next month. The Yacht Club hosted dodgeball in the parking lot, and inside I set up a bike friendly photo studio.

Rainbeau
